As a parent, you might be wondering why is it so important for your child to be on their tummy to play if he or she prefers to be on their back? It seems much easier to just let them rest their, content and happy! Here are several reasons why, during infancy, your child should spend more than one cumulative hour a day while awake on their tummy:

  • Tummy time improves neck, arm, core, and leg strength
  • It also improves your child’s ability to roll and crawl
  • It allows your child to explore their environment with a different perspective
  • It helps prevent a flat spot from developing on the back of the head
  • It also helps to prevent torticollis (a tightening of a neck muscle)

If your child does not tolerate being on their tummy for long periods of time, here are a few tips to help:

  • Start with 2-3 minutes and work your way up to longer periods of time
  • Establish it as part of a routine (after every diaper change or after bath time)
  • Place toys or mirrors in front of your child so they can visually engage with something that is interesting to them
  • Place a small towel roll under their upper chest with their arms positioned on top of the towel
