5 Exercises to Strengthen Core Muscles
Have your child lay on his back with his knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Have him push through his heels to raise the bottom up off the floor. Be sure that he is keeping his head and shoulders on the ground. Hold this position for several seconds.
Make it fun: See how many cars you can zoom under your child’s back or see how many stuffed animals you can place on his belly without letting them fall.
Have him lay on his stomach on the floor and try to lift his arms up off of the floor, so that his upper chest comes up too.
Make it fun: Complete a puzzle or have your child pop bubbles.
Have your child lay on his back with his knees bent and feet on the floor. Push up through hands and heels so that his back and bottom are up off the floor.
Make it fun: Grab a soccer ball and have your child move around in this position kicking the ball with his legs.
Have your child lay on his belly on the floor with his elbows straight. Parent or older sibling lift the child up at the waist or knees and have him walk forward on his hands.
Make it fun: Have a race between siblings or roll a ball or car with hands.
Have your child lay on his back on the floor, couch, or bed with knees bent and feet on the floor. Hold your child fingers or hands and have them sit up; you can assist them by pulling their arms as needed.
Make it fun: Sing a song or have them bring you a different toy with each sit up.
